Flower girls, scattering flower petals before the brides path, traditionally, was a way of paying homage to the gods of fertility, on behalf of the bride. However originally, rather than flower petals, the girls would scatter grains and fragrant herbs. In Elizabethan times, these herb scattering children became flower bearing girls. Today many brides ask younger sisters, relatives or godchildren to be flower girls at their wedding and carry a basket of rose or flower petals to scatter down the aisle.
