Keira Knightley's couture wedding dress

When you put so much time, effort and money into finding the perfect wedding dress, it can be hard to come to grips with the fact that you're only going to wear it once!

But the one-wear bridal gown tradition doesn't have to be the only way. Recently, the beautiful actress Keira Knightley proved the versatility of wedding dresses, wearing altered versions of her gown more than once!

Long before her wedding, Keira was spotted wearing the dress at an industry event in 2008.

She then married her musician beau James Righton in May 2013, wearing the same pale grey Chanel dress. The strapless, tulle number was paired with a white tweed jacket, courtesy of Karl Lagerfeld himself, and pink and grey Chanel ballet pumps. She finished off the look with a subtle floral headpiece. It was a gorgeous yet laid-back look to match her ceremony of just a handful of guests in France.

Inspiring brides longing to wear their wedding dress more than just once - or even twice - Keira opted for 'third time lucky' at a charity event in early December.

This time, she switched up the look with gold Jimmy Choo shoes. But not only this, she also altered the neckline of the dress to include a sheer overlay covering her chest and arms, with beautiful pearl embroidered cuffs and collar.

If you have a wedding dress, or are looking for one for your upcoming nuptials, think about whether you can wear it again. It's a great way to make a statement and is undoubtedly on-trend with its eco-friendly connotations.

While some brides are happy for their gown to hang in the closet for decades, you might just be longing to rescue your bridal bounty from captivity and give it a makeover! If so, follow in the footsteps of Keira and don't be afraid to alter or rewear it.

Long gowns can be shortened, sleeves can be added or removed and necklines can be transformed - so get creative!
