Danish Wedding Traditions

Danish Flag

Before the bride and groom are married, a Gate of Honour is constructed outside the home of the family of the bride. A series of branches are erected into an archway, which is either attached to the front door or left on the front pathway.

The conucopiaor kransekageis the traditional wedding cake for the Danes. It is a tall circular cake layered with almond paste.

During the reception, the groom will leave the room for a short while. Whilst he is gone, it is tradition for all the male guests to go up to the bride and plant a kiss on her cheek. When the groom returns, the bride leaves, and the groom receives the same treatment from the female guests!

Towards the end of the reception, the family of the groom will join hands in a circle and trap the newly-wed man. They then slowly move towards him as close as they can get and someone cuts his tie and socks with scissors or a knife.
