Traditionally, when the bride and groom left the reception, bells were chimed, horns were honked, people cheered, and in the evenings fireworks may go off.
To add to the festivities, tin cans or old shoes were tied to the back of the wedding car.
The excessive noise was to ensure that any evil spirits would be kept at bay, thus leaving the newlyweds to start their lives together free of any curses.
