The Bridal Garter
The wedding tradition of throwing the garter originated in France, when wedding guests believed owning a
piece of the bride’s wedding dress would bring good fortune, luck and much happiness.
The bride would
often be assailed at the altar by hordes of guests competing for the
prize and her wedding dress was sometimes torn to shreds.
To keep the dress
(and themselves) intact, brides began throwing their bridal garters to
their male guests.
Nowadays, the garter is taken off by the groom at the reception and is thrown into the crowd of unmarried men. As with the bouquet, whoever catches the garter is thought to be the next to marry.
Often, the man who caught the garter is asked to place it on the leg of the woman who caught the bouquet and they will be asked to start the next dance together!
