The Bouquet
The Bouquet
Originally, the bride's bouquet was made from herbs, spices and flowers. The herbs and spices symbolised fertility and new life, as well as warding off any evil spirits or family demons, while the flowers were a symbol of innocence and purity.
Today, the bouquet is usually a beautiful arrangement of the bride's favourite flower, or one that best suits her dress and all over theme of the wedding.
As with the throwing of the garter, at the reception the bride throws her bouquet into the crowd of unmarried women, and whoever catches it is thought to be the next to marry.
However, if the bouquet if dropped, the woman is then thought to be the last to marry. Sometimes, the man who caught the garter is asked to put it on the woman who caught the bouquet, and then they are usually requested to start the next dance.
