Indian Wedding Traditions

Although the Dowry Prohibition Act was introduced in 1985, brides are still expected to have a dowry. This varies considerably, depending on which region of India the bride is from.
A woman from the Punjab should possess a car and refrigerator to be considered a beneficial wife, while a woman from the Goa region should have $12,000 as well as other expensive assets to secure a prospective husband.
A cleansing ritual must be undertaken by a Bengali bride of the Hindu faith, and is one of their oldest traditions.
She must bathe in a sacred river where she is completely attended to by women who brush her hair, do her nails, apply her make-up, and then bless her and everything that will used in the wedding ceremony.
When a Muslim man proposes, it is considered an incredibly important event, and all extended members of both families must be invited.
If a young Muslim girl is seen on numerous occasions with the same man, it is expected that they will marry, although, it is up to their parents to decide together whether the union will take place or not.
If the parents do give their blessing to the union, a celebration is held, complete with a huge feast and gift giving.
Traditionally during this feast, the young man will place a sweet meat in the mouth of his future bride. This is to symbolise the joyous occasion, and that her mouth shall remain sweet always.
Mendhi Night ~ The night before a Muslim wedding, a henna coloured paste is used to decorate the Bride's hands and feet in intricate patterns, as stain her finger and toe nails.
