Traditionally, the groom presents his bride-to-be with an engagement ring. In most cases a band with a stone of some kind.
In Ancient Greece, the ring was a gift from the groom to his future father-in-law. It was also a symbol of the husband's pledge to keep his bride happy to the best of his ability, with the stone representing everlasting happiness.
It is also said that the ring was almost like a deposit towards a Bride and was a sign of the groom's security, especially if he presented his bride with a ring including a precious stone.
Today, engagement rings are generally set with a diamond, but other options are the birthstone of the bride, or her favourite stone.
