By carrying his bride across the threshold, the groom protected his new wife from harms way.
It also dates back to the time of Marriage Without Consent, when the new bride would literally be carried kicking and screaming across the threshold!
On a lighter note, it is considered extremely good luck if the sun shines on the bride as she is carried across.
