An elegant estate with a chilled vibe set the scene for Melissa and Nicholas' romantic journey from online dating to newlywed bliss.

Despite almost being neighbours and sharing a slew of mutual friends, it took online dating to bring Melissa and Nicholas together....and then a long-distance relationship to confirm their love....culminating in a rustic, romantic ceremony under an old oak tree.

Sound like a fairytale? Pretty much.

The courtship

Real wedding ideas

It can only have been a case of sliding doors which prevented Melissa and Nicholas meeting sooner. The pair lived down the road from one another and even attended the same university parties, but only met later thanks to the wonders of internet dating...and here they are.

It wasn't all plain sailing though. Soon after the couple met, Nick had to move to Canada for more than a year. They say long distance is make or break, and in this case, distance really did make the heart grow fonder.

The marriage proposal

engagement rings

Nick's firsts few attempts a romantic proposal on vacation in Spain were false starts. A romantic restaurant balcony dinner had to be abandoned due to freezing weather. A rowboat proposal was a washout.

A hire car got stuck in an impossibly narrow village road...so Nick decided to pull out the ring he'd been carrying around in his pocket for four days and pop the question on the hotel balcony...and Melissa said yes.

Favourite moment?

Too hard to choose just one, Melissa's favourite moments were walking up the aisle with her Dad and locking eyes with Nick; as well as sharing the day with their dog.

An enthusiastic ring bearer, Mia sprinted down the white carpet aisle completely oblivious to the meaning of the event and delirious with joy at seeing (and licking) her owners' faces - a super grounding experience that gave everyone a giggle and set a relaxing tone for the rest of the day.

The vibe - a mix of modern classic and back-to-nature

After visiting the Yarra Valley together when Nick returned from Vancouver, the area was full of fantastic memories and an easy choice for the couple to host their big day. With its history and glorious Oak tree, wedding venue Coombe Yarra Valley was the perfect pick for vet Melissa, and animal-loving Nick

Capturing their desired combo of formal and classic elements but retaining a warm, relaxed vibe with a focus on nature and natural light, the on-site reception venue with picture windows looking over the gorgeous grounds provided a breathtaking backdrop for the celebrations.

The gorgeous dress (and the rest)

Melissa's luxe off-the-the-shoulder lace gown from wedding dress boutique L'Amour Bridal Boutique was the ideal choice for the couple's dreamy day, although it didn't start out looking like this.

While Melissa loved the original gown, she had her heart set on a different top, so worked with the super talented Reingard at L'Amour Bridal to recreate it, even adding hundreds of hand-sewn Swarovski crystals.

These, together with Melissa's embellished Jimmy Choo shoes and pretty Paspaley pearls added just the right degree of glam.

Nick's classically cool suit and tie combo, picked up from Oscar Hunt Tailors, was pretty swish too.

That Divine Dog - aka Mia the Maid of Honour

The couple only had one super-special member in their bridal party, and that was their darling dog. Wearing a custom-made hand-engraved collar with fresh flowers to match Melissa's bouquet, the pretty pooch was front and centre for the entire event.

The little things

Guests at the wedding were spoiled not with sugared almonds, but with take-home personalised Emmelle Home and Body candles, and during the evening, were treated to the talents of the Darcy String Quartet and DJ Mimi.

If you could change one thing...

Caught up in the excitement of the day, Melissa and Nick totally forget to include their furry friend Mia in their beautiful photos, but, since she was busy stealing hors d'oeuvres from their guests, we think all's forgiven.
