The Wedding Ceremony

Planning your Wedding Ceremony with Jan Littlejohn celebrant at Ceremonies With Style

The wedding ceremony can easily get lost when all the details such as the wedding dress, the flowers , the decorations, the cake and everything else takes over. Don't expect the ceremony to fall into place all on it's own. You need to invest time and thought into what really is the most significant part of your day.

We share a few important tips to ensure a successful ceremony:

  1. Don't keep your guests waiting. As the bride, it's best you arrive 5 - 10 minutes late. This allows the late arrivals to scurry in unseen and for those who were there 30 minutes before the given ceremony time won't be left waiting for an hour uncomfortable....not forgetting your anxious groom.
  2. If you are having an outdoor ceremony or a ceremony where most guests are standing be mindful of their comfort and don't have an extended ceremony. Most civil ceremonies are 20 minutes in length. This allows time for the vows, exchange of rings and two readings.
  3. You aren't expected to memorise your vows on your wedding day. The options you have are you can repeat them after the celebrant; or the celebrant can say them in the form of a question as is done during wedding ceremonies performed in places of worship or you can read them from a beautiful piece of handmade paper (please no messy post it notes or coffee stained paper). If you decide to memorise them, always keep a copy of your vows handy as wedding day jitters can blur even the most photographic of memories.
  4. When writing your own wedding vows you can choose to write them together with eachother or write your own and surprise eachother on the day.
  5. When writing your own vows, for ideas on what to include we suggest you talk about how you fell in love, what you love about your partner, important events that you have shared and future aspirations, you can also includes quotes from your favourite passages.
  6. Including your own wedding ceremony rituals such as sand ceremonies, hand fasting and lighting unity candles is very popular with civil wedding ceremonies. Why not even adopt your own.
  7. If marrying in a place of worship by a religious officiant, you probably won't have much say in how you want the ceremony to play out. If you are wanting to add your own personal touches, readings or music be respectful and discuss this with the officiant first.
  8. Rather than not wear your engagement ring at all the bride should transfer the ring to the other hand and then replacement it after the ceremony.
  9. When standing for prolonged periods of time keep your knees relaxed. If you lock your knees blood flow can be restricted and you may find yourself flat on the floor.
  10. Make sure your ushers know where to seat important family members and special friends, and traditionally the mother of the bride is last to be seated and always at the front closest to the bride.
